STARS: National Geographic Live: A Pirate’s Life
Friday Nov 6, 2026 12:30 pm
A tribute to two towering, shared centennials: composer Antônio Carlos “Tom” Jobim and saxophonist Stan Getz, both born in 1927 and forever linked by the landmark album Getz/Gilberto and the bossa nova wave it carried around the world.
Trio da Paz — guitarist Romero Lubambo, bassist Nilson Matta, and drummer Duduka Da Fonseca — leads the program, joined by longtime collaborators vocalist Maucha Adnet and tenor saxophonist Harry Allen. Together they trace Jobim’s sophisticated songcraft and Getz’s velvet-toned phrasing through the songbook that made “The Girl from Ipanema” a global standard, alongside deeper cuts from both artists’ catalogs.
This lineup has been a recurring feature of Trio da Paz’s celebrated summer residencies at Dizzy’s Club (Jazz at Lincoln Center) in New York, where Harry Allen and Maucha Adnet have appeared as frequent guest artists on the group’s Jobim/Getz-themed programs.
Vocals, Maucha Adnet | Born in Rio de Janeiro, Adnet began performing professionally at 15. From 1984–1994 she toured, recorded, and performed worldwide with Antonio Carlos Jobim and his band Banda Nova, appearing on four albums together including the Grammy-winning Antonio Brasileiro. She has also recorded with Dorival Caymmi and Chico Buarque, guested on Randy Brecker’s Grammy-winning Into the Sun, and performs regularly with Trio da Paz.
Tenor Saxophone, Harry Allen | A leading voice of the swing-tenor tradition, Allen has recorded more than 70 albums as a leader, including Viva! Bossa Nova and Something About Jobim. Frequently compared to Scott Hamilton, with whom he has recorded, Allen draws on the lineage of Coleman Hawkins, Ben Webster, and Stan Getz. He was inducted into the Rhode Island Music Hall of Fame in 2024.
Guitar, Romero Lubambo | Trio da Paz. Recorded and performed with Dianne Reeves, Michael Brecker, and Kathleen Battle.
Bass & Drums, Nilson Matta & Duduka Da Fonseca | Trio da Paz. Matta has recorded with Joe Henderson and Yo-Yo Ma; Da Fonseca has recorded and performed with Antonio Carlos Jobim and Astrud Gilberto.
“The members of Trio da Paz… are among the Brazilian jazzers who get the classiest session jobs in town, but this is where you’ll hear them really cut loose… saluting one of the most storied jazz–bossa nova collaborations of all time.” — Time Out New York
