Lighting Highlights by Lighting Designer, Riley Goossen
Ever wondered what makes performances look so mesmerizing at the Vilar? In this blog post, Vilar Lighting Designer Riley Goossen, pulls back the curtain on the world-class production equipment we use to create an unparalleled visual experience for every Vilar audience member.
True Colors – Cyndi Lauper | Chroma Q Color Force Cyc Lights

At the Vilar, lighting is about artistry as much as illumination. Our 14 new Chroma Q Color Force LED Cyc Lights bring a new level of vibrancy, efficiency, and creative versatility to our stage. Here’s how they elevate our shows:
💡 Our previous tungsten cyc lights consumed over 45,000 watts. Now, cutting-edge LED technology in our new equipment produces 4x the brightness at just 10,000 watts – a 78% reduction in power usage!
🎨 The RGBA (Red, Green, Blue, Amber) LED engine in these fixtures generates over 330,000 lumens and can effortlessly create more than 4 trillion colors without using traditional gel filters – reducing labor costs and expanding creative possibilities.
📐 Designed to hang horizontally or vertically, these fixtures can produce dynamic visual effects suited to any performance.
🎭 When we upgraded to this equipment, we donated our previous cyc lights to local school theatrical programs, ensuring the next generation benefits from access to professional-grade stage lighting.
With unparalleled brightness, limitless color options, and a fraction of energy consumption, this upgrade keeps creativity center stage while upholding our commitment to sustainability.
Kodachrome – Paul Simon | GLP Impression X5 Moving Wash Lights

A single performance can shift from an intimate glow to a high-energy spectacle in moments, and our 16 GLP Impression X5 Moving Wash Lights handle that challenge with ease. Here’s what makes them shine:
🌟 These fixtures use an RGBL (Red, Green, Blue, Lime) color mixing system. The Lime component balances reds and blues for more natural, vibrant hues, creating a truer-to-life light at 200,000 lumens.
🔍 The 5°–65° zoom range of these lights is powered by a belt-driven system that allows for lightning-fast transitions from a tight beam to a wide wash.
🎆 Featuring a “base-less” design, these fixtures house their power supply inside their moving yoke, making them smaller, lighter, and capable of near-silent operation.
Whether casting a seamless theatrical wash or cutting through the space with dramatic beams, these lights continue to impress every visiting tour’s lighting designer.
Ray of Light – Madonna | Martin Mac Quantum Profiles

Some lighting fixtures set the mood. Others steal the show. Our 14 Martin Mac Quantum Profiles do both. Here’s why these compact, powerful moving spotlights are a lighting designer’s dream:
🔦 Weighing just 51.1 pounds, these fixtures deliver an impressive 12,700 lumens without adding excess weight to the over-stage rig.
🔥 These lights can use “gobos” (stenciled circular discs placed between the light source and the lens) to project custom patterns onto the stage, adding depth, movement, and dynamic effects, including very convincing water and fire effects.
🌈 This fixture’s CMY (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow) color mixing system uses dichroic glass in front of a 475W white LED engine to create smooth, rich and vibrant color.
💎 These fixtures have an adjustable iris, which allows designers to rapidly change the size of the beam to adapt in real time to performance needs.
Whether crafting dramatic textures for a ballet, punchy rock-and-roll beams for a high-energy concert, or immersive atmospheric effects, these spotlights adapt flawlessly to the Vilar’s diverse programming.
